Nothing says Queen of your Castle like a nice master bedroom. Trouble is, it’s not the first – or even best place – to spend loads and loads of money. Let’s be really honest with ourselves. Bedrooms are the last place you should make high price home improvements. They’re just a larger (or small) square space with – hopefully – some good, or even great, closet space. They’re large, vast rooms begging to be filled with furniture. That’s it. They’re a lot like the living room, except that you get to put more personal touches and really hone in on comfort and luxury in the privacy of your bedroom. But just because it’s four plain, boring walls with a floor and ceiling doesn’t mean the rest of it has to be beige. When sprucing up your private space, consider these ideas.
Sanctuary
When it comes to decor, the visual appeal of your room, choose something that brings you both joy and peace. This includes everything from color palette, to artwork, to furniture and storage. Your master bedroom is where you start and end each day. At the very basic level it should serve as the perfect place to rest and recover so you’re ready to attack whatever the next day brings. For some people, this includes a neutral or nude color scheme. For others it means the height of interior decorative style. Whatever route you choose to go – boho chic with knick-knacks galore, or posh and sophisticated black and white with an element of minimalism in art and decor – make sure it is able to center you from the get-go.
Storage
You might think to yourself, ‘Well, it’d really be better if I had more space.’ At the very least, more functional space. If you have an incredibly large room but shoddy closets, then taking up valuable real estate for a new walk-in closet instead of room for another couch is a much better use of space and funds. Likewise, if you have a limited amount of space, configuring clever storage within these four walls is all it takes. Recessed knee-drawers are perfect for the smaller master bedroom where extra storage is needed, but the room for an extravagant closet doesn’t exist. You can also pick furniture pieces that masterfully mask their storage spaces. Bedframes are almost guaranteed to have the option of including drawers underneath for clothing or extra sheets.
Suite Life
Reconfiguring space to create a master bedroom suite is another popular trend in master bedrooms. Knock down the wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom and install your own private entrance to your very own bathroom. These types of master bedroom suites are fetching amazing prices at resale, and give a little more luxury to the house in general. The bathroom doesn’t have to be huge. It just has to be yours and yours alone. The right materials and spa elements and you’ve not formed a monopoly on home comforts.
Skip It
You’ve got the walk-in closets. The new bedroom suit of furniture. The private bathroom. The linens and fresh coat of paint all picked out. But what to do with that leftover space that’s just sitting there like a gaping hole. You could fill it with bookcases (or built-in shelves) and a comfy chair or hammock for reading. You could carve out a meditation area to really help you center and harness your positive energy. You could put the tv over there instead of in front of your bed, and add a little loveseat for cuddling. The possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.
One thing we don’t suggest you use this extra space for is a home office. A writing table for journaling, writing notes/thank you/holiday cards or making an errands list is one thing. But putting your work in your bedroom – the place of rest and relaxation – will muddy the waters and keep you from that much needed R&R. If you need a home office, there’s bound to be a place for it; your bedroom is not it, however.
While it may not be the highest of priorities, taking the time to curate a master bedroom that’s worthy of royalty will be well worth the peace of mind, the serenity you’ll give to yourself day after day. Enhance the luxuries you want. Make the space work for you. Then enjoy.
